MAMDANI'S THREAT TO ARREST PM BENJAMIN NETANYAHU SPARKS DIPLOMATIC FIRESTORM

New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani has ignited international controversy after saying he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if the Israeli leader visited New York City while under an International Criminal Court warrant.

Mamdani made the remarks during a campaign event in Queens on July 18, 2026. Asked how he would handle a visit from Netanyahu who faces an ICC arrest warrant issued in November 2024 over alleged war crimes in Gaza, Mamdani said: “As mayor, I would uphold the law. That includes cooperating with international legal obligations.”

The comment immediately drew backlash from pro-Israel groups and several US lawmakers. Netanyahu does not currently have travel plans to New York, but the UN General Assembly meets in the city every September, and Israeli leaders routinely attend.

Why is this matter receiving global attention?

The US is not a member of the ICC and does not recognize its jurisdiction over American citizens or allied leaders. The Biden and Trump administrations have both rejected the court’s authority to prosecute officials from non-member states like Israel. 

However, 124 countries do recognize the ICC, including most of Europe. If Mamdani were to attempt an arrest, it would set up a direct clash between city, state, federal, and international law.

Political fallout 

Republican critics called the remarks “dangerous and antisemitic.” Democratic leaders have been more cautious with some distancing themselves from Mamdani's stance while others praised him for “taking a stand on human rights.”

For Mamdani, a democratic socialist who has been critical of Israeli military operations, the comment may energize progressive voters in New York. For US-Israel relations, it adds another flashpoint at a time when Washington is deeply mired in middle east crisis and still stuck with Iran.

Legal experts say a mayor has no authority to execute an ICC warrant. On July 21 2026, Zohran Mamdani seemed to roll back on his threat by acknowledging he had no constitutional power to arrest Bibi and called on the federal government to do the needful since arrest powers in the US rest with federal law enforcement. 

Whether the threat has any legal teeth is doubtful, however, one huge takeaway stands out: foreign policy is no longer confined to Washington. Local candidates are now being asked to take positions on global conflicts — and their answers are being heard worldwide

Mayor Mamdani's voice adds to the very many others who have may expressed lots of reservations with the way and manner the war in Gaza is carried out as well as the plight of its inhabitants especially after the October 7 attacks.
