DO ALL WOMEN BELONG TO THE KITCHEN, THE LIVING ROOM AND THE OTHER ROOM?

On the 14th day of October, The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari arrived in Berlin on a three-day official visit to Germany to strengthen bilateral ties with the heartland of Europe.

The President met with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel  in Berlin and a host of other German diplomats in the hope of hammering out a deal to attract Germany assistance, investors among other things.

Back home in Nigeria, the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, in an interview granted to the BBC, noted that her husband's government, which was roughly sixteen month old at the time, had been hijacked by powerful cabals in the country.

The unofficial First Lady of Nigeria implied that there was a government inside a government which has her husband as a figure head while the real men calling the shots are operating behind the scenes.

She noted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has veered off from its track of delivering the much desired change to the millions of Nigerians in need of it.

She went on to say that should this trend of development continue, she would not support her husband come 2019 if he (the president) decides to run for a second term in office.

The woman noted that this state of things is largely responsible for the hunger, starvation and suffering currently being experienced by the poor people in the country.

When grilled about this in a press conference with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, Mr. Buhari responded, "I don't know what political party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen, the living room and the other room."

The comment in themselves seem very fascinating as the president  made the comment in a press conference, on a foreign country, in the presence of the number one person in the country, a woman, who apparently does not belong to the kitchen, the living room and the other room unlike the president's wife.

As is expected, the statement drew a lot of reactions from Nigerians who are very good and used to analyzing unguarded utterances made by unthinking members of its political class and poorly-educated elites.

Nigerian women felt particularly insulted by the statement because the First Lady though unofficially, represents every woman in the country by virtue of being married to the President.

To consign her to belonging to the KLO party (Kitchen, Living room and Other room) means disrespect for the role and place of women in the 21st century. Apparently, the Nigerian President needs to be tutored or reminded of this.

It seems unfair to say that the 21st century women belong only to the KLO party. For the most part, the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel who hosted the Nigerian President is a woman. The South Korean  President Park Geun-hye is a woman and a mother also.

The Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is a woman. Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic is the current president of Croatia. Theresa May is the current Prime Minister of Britain. Kersti Kaljulai is the current President of Estonia

The list is indeed endless. All the same, my mother does not belong to the KLO party else would not have raised me to believe in myself.

I do not also hope to marry a woman who would belong to the KLO party else I would be consigning my unborn children to a world where they would become so used to unguarded utterance without knowing the enormity of their talks. Be that as it may, I leave the rest to your discretion and comments. I eagerly await them.
